Over 75 million people wear contact lenses. These numbers should prove that wearing lenses is not difficult. Anyone interested in contacts should always see a professional eye care practitioner first to ensure that they are a candidate for lenses. After an initial adjustment period (usually a couple of weeks), most wearers report no discomfort and are barely aware of lenses on their eyes.
Kevin Tuohy designed “modern” contact lenses in 1947 with the progression from plastic sclera to plastic corneal lenses. This was innovative as the lens only covered the cornea vs. the entire eye. The drawback to these early lenses were that they were “hard” lenses and uncomfortable for the wearer. These contacts were the only type available for the next two decades, however.
