The idea of placing lenses into eyes to correct vision were actually first thought of by Leonardo da Vinci in the 1500’s. At that time in history, his idea did not have the means to be carried out. Fast forward to 1801, when Thomas Young showed that he could correct vision by using a ¼” long water-filled glass tube.
Today's bifocal lenses are available in daily-wear soft and rigid gas permeable materials. These lenses feature two prescriptions on one lens: one to correct distance vision, if that's needed, and the other to correct near vision.
