Wash and dry your hands thoroughly prior to inserting lenses. Never use your fingernails to insert as you could tear a lens. When inserting over a sink, close drain. Always check to make sure that you are inserting the correct lens in correct eye. Check the lenses for any tears or deposits before inserting. Place the lens, cup side up, on the tip of your forefinger. Make sure it is not inside out. While holding your upper eyelid, pull down on lower lid. Position lens in the middle of your eye. Close your eye briefly for lens to position itself. Apply one or two drops of lubricant if your eyes feel dry or vision is blurred.
Kevin Tuohy designed “modern” contact lenses in 1947 with the progression from plastic sclera to plastic corneal lenses. This was innovative as the lens only covered the cornea vs. the entire eye. The drawback to these early lenses were that they were “hard” lenses and uncomfortable for the wearer. These contacts were the only type available for the next two decades, however.
